CAWP New Teacher Initiative UPDATE: Application for 2007 is online.
According to a report published by the National Center for Educational Statistics, one in five new teachers will leave the teaching field within the first three years (Hussar, 1999). Many new teachers feel under- prepared, exhausted, overwhelmed, disillusioned, underpaid, and isolated. However, in cases where new teachers have access to support, guidance, and a professional community, fewer leave the profession, and those who stay feel more prepared for the challenges they face.
In response to this well-documented need, the Chicago Area Writing Project (CAWP) is sponsoring a special 30-hour New Teacher Initiative (NTI) program focusing on new teachers (0-3 years of teaching experience) teaching in low-performing schools. This program supports new teachers by fostering knowledge of effective practices in literacy instruction and modeling processes for ongoing reflection and development. It also will connect new teachers with a supportive professional community of other educators who are interested in improving their craft.
Free class. No fee will be charged for this 30-hour program. All new teachers will receive 30 CPDUs which they can use for state recertification purposes and two hours of CPS lane credit at no cost. However, if they choose, participants can pay a reduced tuition fee ($230/semester hour) for two hours of RU graduate credit, they which they can apply toward the acquisition of a standard teaching certificate.
